POSITION: Social Science Assistant
Callan Park Festival is celebrating Mental Health on Sunday 1st May 2011 by honouring mental health consumers, their carers, family, friends and the community that supports them.
We are looking for Social Science Assistant Interns who will undertake research in the areas of Community Care, Mental Health and Child Welfare. You will work in teams under the supervision of the CEO to undertake research and develop planning documentation that will make a significant contribution to public debate and policy.
OVERVIEW: Internships will cover a wide variety of opportunities in fields including:
- community work and community development
- social casework
- social policy and research
- advocacy and social action
- government departments such as community services, juvenile justice and corrective services
- local government agencies
- neighborhood and community development organisations and
- organisations working with children, the disabled and aged persons
Interns may be involved in the creative and performing arts, housing, education, employment, sport and leisure, residential care, community development, working with the homeless or those with mental illness, or a wide range of youth-related roles.
The emphasis of this internship is based on developing practical experience through fieldwork and introduces interns to a range of community and organisational structures, professional value frameworks, and skills in interpersonal and written communication.
This unique internship will enable interns to identify issues of power within social networks, including:
- conflicting and collaborative interests, participation, representation, values, ethics, trust and collaboration
- ways of working with others to achieve shared objectives
- mechanisms for goal setting, issues identification, information and resource sharing that operates in everyday life
OUR GOALS:
- To ensure that each intern has an opportunity to participate in various aspects of the research to gain maximum experience
- To create a working plan and accreditation to implement that plan
Our core internship methodology includes comprehensive and supervised hands-on research, this is backed by effective communication and ongoing skills assessment provided by our dedicated and responsive Human Resources team.
TASKS INCLUDE:
- Undertake research and produce reports
- To assist in creating a cohesive plan to deliver quality care that is unsurpassed
- Contribute to the creation and develop of planning documentsTo ensure that all documentation follows or improves upon government guidelines for community care
- Communicate with and/or supervise contact with the community, NGOs and government
- Assist in the accreditation process for the Utopia Community Home Care project
QUALITIES NEEDED:
- Multi-tasking ability
- Research experience or be a fast learner with experience in a related field
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and with a team and
- Ability to think both creatively and logically
As this is a Volunteer Internship, no payment will be awarded, but letters of recommendation from supervisors will be given. We will also acknowledge your name before and permanently after the festival on our volunteer honour role on the website.
You will gain opportunities to enhance a resume with charity work, gain invaluable experience and work in an environment where experienced people are volunteering for an excellent cause.
This position is flexible, as we are an Eco-Friendly Institute. Our interns communicate and work via the web through our Gmail and Skype. This position does require that you have web access, a mobile and if possible a landline. You may be required to attend some (but not all) meetings. Meetings will be held at various locations, usually in university’s or the CBD.
You may volunteer on the day of the festival, but, it is not required in order to hold this position.
